Amidst the mire of corruption scandals that have rocked Sri Lankan cricket over the past year, the nation’s cricket governing body has stepped up its efforts to eliminate the menace of illicit activities. The Sports Minister of the country, Harin Fernando has thus claimed that all individuals involved in betting will be barred from holding any position Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).
There have been serious allegations of match-fixing on certain Sri Lankan officials in particular home games with former cricketing great Sanath Jayasuriya being handed a ban for two years for breaching the ICC anti-corruption code.
Fernando said he was keen on implementing reforms in the cricket system which would help them align with the rules and regulations set out by the ICC and thus ban all people with connections to gambling firms.
“From now on, anyone who is involved in betting or has a close relative involved in betting will not be able to hold office,” Fernando addressed the media in Colombo.
