Coming into the Colombo Test, Sri Lanka had an ideal opportunity to win or draw the game and claim a glorious start to their campaign in the ICC World Test Championship. However, New Zealand brought their best game forward to sink hosts Sri Lanka and draw the two-game Test series.
Sri Lanka’s skipper Dimuth Karunaratne, as per the expectations, was extremely disappointed to see his team throwing away a golden opportunity to win a red-ball series. ‘Freedom’ has been a popular word during the opening batsman’s leadership tenure and he moved forward to use it to urge his batting department to produce better displays.
The 31-year old, while reflecting on the second Test, reiterated that freedom doesn’t mean to hit every ball you see. Karunaratne said that his idea about freedom is to have a free mind and being relaxed to execute your plans nicely. He further highlighted the importance of spending more time on the crease as he also rued his shot-selection. Nevertheless, he is confident about producing better shows in the forthcoming assignments.
