Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis has decided to draw curtains on an illustrious career in international cricket. Mendis, largely renowned for his wide array of spin variations which accounted for a lot of wickets, represented Sri Lanka in 19 Tests, 87 ODIs and 39 T20Is.
Mendis had a shining start to his career when he caught the world’s attention with his breathtaking six-wicket haul against India in the final of the Asia Cup in 2008.
His carom balls outfoxed the star-studded Indian lineup and his stunning spell led Sri Lanka to become the Asia Cup winners in that edition.
Later, Mendis’ variations started to become predictable and innocuous as batsmen began to punish his deliveries. He lost his wicket-taking ability in the latter part of his career resulting in his frequent omission from the national side. He made his international appearance for Sri Lanka in 2015 and has been active in domestic cricket ever since.
