New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by 5 wickets in the 1st T20I at Pallekele international stadium. The match also saw the legend Lasith Malinga becoming the highest wicket-taker in T20Is.
Batting first, the Sri Lankan cricket team scored a reasonably respectable total of 174. Kusal Perera once again impressed with his belligerent batting as he scored 79 off 53.
Isuru Udana smacked two sixes in the final over to give Sri Lanka the much-needed momentum before the defense begins.
However, the Kiwis pulled off a magnificent victory with the help of some responsible batting by Ross Taylor and Colin de Grandhomme in the middle.
The 79-run partnership saw Taylor scoring 48 and de Grandhomme 44. Malinga got rid of Colin but Daryl Mitchell (25) and Mitchell Santner (14) rescued the visitors to a much-needed victory in the series opener.
