As the current Ashes series between Australia and England head to Old Trafford for the fourth Test, the stakes are high as both teams vie to gain the lead. The riveting Headingley encounter, where England achieved a one-wicket win at the back of an incredible innings from Ben Stokes, has sparked comparisons of the series with the iconic 2-1 Ashes win for England in 2005.
These comments are just to an extent given the eerie parallels with the epic series thus far. Even then, the scoreline after three games read 1-1 with the Edgbaston Test in 2005 giving England victory by the barest of margins similar to the Headingley triumph.
It was England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, who starred in the hosts’ wins at that time and now it is another all-rounder by the name of Ben Stokes who is lighting up the series with his splendid performances. The first match of both series followed a similar template with Australia gathering a one-sided win while there was a hard-fought draw for the tourists in one of the encounters – as witnessed in both series.
