The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently penned a tweet for veteran pacer Ishant Sharma on his birthday. While the BCCI’s intentions were well, the video they chose for Ishant’s big day perhaps backfired amidst the storm of vitriolic trolling they had to face.
BCCI posted a video of the 19-year-old Ishant’s five-for against Pakistan in the third Test of the Pakistan tour of India in 2007. Although the spell was pretty impressive for a teenager, Ishant’s five wickets consisted mostly of tail-enders as Pakistan registered a humongous total of 537.
The added irony of the situation was that the BCCI had termed Ishant’s spell as “fiery” even though the fastest delivery of the spell was 134.5 kmph. Expectedly, the Twitter community was ruthless in its trolling of the BCCI and called them out for their antics.
