The first day of the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford witnessed intermittent rain and increasingly windy weather that disrupted play frequently as England bowlers could deliver only half of the allotted overs by stumps.
As players made their way off the field several times during the day’s play, perhaps the most bizarre stoppage in play arrived when the rapidly windy weather conditions caused empty food packets to fly on the pitch blurring the vision of the players. This made the umpires pause play for a while.
Later, the cricketers made their way back to the field but once again the wind caused the bails to fall off the wickets. Despite the bails not being in place, umpires allowed play to continue and a few overs were bowled with the stumps bails-less.
