The introduction of the World Test Championship has added a layer of context to the bilateral series in the longest format. However, the idea of having the top 9 nations play series with each other deprives teams like Ireland, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe to compete against quality teams.
Despite the unhelpful World Test Championship format, Afghanistan is gradually climbing in the ICC Test rankings signifying the extent of their significant improvement in the international arena. Although they were awarded the Test status just two years ago, Afghanistan have made giant strides and are now in top ten of the team rankings in Test cricket having overtaken Zimbabwe.
This remarkable achievement is even more surprising given the fact Afghanistan are currently playing just their third match in Tests where they are giving a tough fight to Bangladesh. Afghanistan lost their debut Test game against India but won the following encounter against Ireland earlier this year.
