Australia’s boisterous celebrations following their thumping 185-run win over England at Old Trafford have generated controversy over the last few days. The tourists indulged in a raucous on-field party after the Ashes-retaining victory which saw Steve Smith wear spectacles in the middle of the team huddle.
The sight of Smith donning a pair of glasses and shadow batting left-handed has caused many pundits and fans to allege this an act mocking England off-spinner Jack Leach. However, Australia coach Justin Langer has denied this accusation and instead claimed Smith’s antics were a joke on former opening batsman Chris Rogers, who also used to wear glasses.
"I was there, I know the truth, they were talking about Chris Rogers who was here four years ago. People can make of it what they like. We can't do anything of what people make of it,” Langer said.
