Former England pacer Steve Harmison has made a controversial statement in the aftermath of Australia’s Ashes-retaining win at Old Trafford. Steve Smith has been the star performer this series, piling on a mountain of runs despite the constant jeers by the partisan England supporters.
However, Harmison believes Smith will always be remembered for his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal at Cape Town last year. He suggested it was impossible to change anyone’s opinion about this as the blotch of ‘cheating’ will permanently stick with Smith even if he ends as one of the batting greats of the game.
"I don't think you can forgive him. When you're known as a cheat – and he is, I'm not going to sugar-coat it, the three guys cheated – that's on your CV. You're marked and you take it to your grave. Whatever Steve Smith does, he'll always be remembered for what happened in South Africa,” he said.
