Kyle Abbott registered staggering numbers of 17/86 across the two innings of the clash between Hampshire and Somerset to pick up the best match figures in first-class cricket since Jim Laker’s 19/90 in 1956.
The former South African pace bowler picked up 9/40 in the first innings and continued to terrorize the opposition in the second innings as well, taking a further 8/46 to deliver his side an emphatic 136-run victory. It is only the second instance of a bowler taking 17 wickets in a match in this century.
The 32-year-old’s extraordinary bowling performance affords him a special place in history and will always be remembered for the destruction he unleashed on the fateful day. "It hasn't quite sunk in. It is pretty incredible,” a delighted Abbott later told the media.
