India's ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin reached the landmark of 350 Test wickets on the final day of the opening game against South Africa. Ashwin’s dismissal of Theunis de Bruyn helped him equal the all-time record of Sri Lankan spin maestro Muttiah Muralitharan for the fastest bowler to 350 Test scalps.
Both off-spinners claimed the feat in the 66th game of their respective careers. Ashwin had earlier in the match taken his 27th five-wicket haul when he registered impressive figures of 7/145 in the first innings. Having been left out of the West Indies series, Ashwin has made a stellar comeback to the national side and shown he still belongs to the highest level.
The 33-year-old finished with eight wickets in the match and reaffirmed his undeniable status as India’s premier spinner in the longest format. He made his Test debut in 2011 and has never looked back ever since even though he has fallen out of favour with India’s white-ball setup.
