Sri Lanka suffered a humiliating defeat to Australia in the opening game of the three-match T20I series as the tourists could manage only 99/9 in their 20 overs, in reply to the home side’s mammoth total of 233/2. The Australian batsmen completely ransacked Sri Lanka’s bowling, that looked clueless amidst the ruthless batting charge.
As veteran paceman Lasith Malinga returned to captain Sri Lanka following his withdrawal from the Pakistan tour, the team was taken to the cleaners by an exuberant performance from Australia. This does not bode too well for Malinga’s captaincy record as Sri Lanka has lost seven of their last eight matches under him.
The 36-year-old took over as the full-time skipper of the island nation in the shortest format earlier this year but Sri Lanka has not benefitted much with him as the leader barring one win over New Zealand at home. Young all-rounder Dasun Shanaka was Sri Lanka’s captain during their 3-0 whitewash against Pakistan in Lahore.
