Babar Azam held the press conference before Pakistan Cricket Team left for Australia. The newly appointed T20I captain is eager to do well on the tour with a relatively new team. The questions were asked and answered during a very watchable conference at the Gadaffi stadium Lahore.
The highlight of the press conference was the part when Babar was asked about the place of senior players; for example, Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez in the team. Replying to that question Babar said, “I felt like that I required senior players in the team. I gave my opinion on the selection process but the final decision stood with the Selection Committee and the Coach”.
This has raised serious suspicions over Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Does the all-powered Misbah-ul-Haq hold the ultimate authority on every matter in the side? Is Misbah still the back-stage captain of Pakistan’s team? Generally, in team selection, the captain of the team has a huge role to play. If he is not getting what he asked for, he might not be able to implement his strategies according to his plans.
Babar’s controversial answer might open the doors of new arguments in the cricket board. The public is already very much furious over PCB for allotting Misbah with a dual role and now the unnecessary intervention in the team matters will disrupt the build-up of new management.
Keep in mind that, Sarfraz Ahmed was sacked for his poor performance in the recent past which allowed Babar to become the captain of the Pakistan T20I team. Moreover, Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik have not been part of the team after the ICC Cricket World Cup. It is still very vague that how the future of these two veteran cricketers unfolds. Misbah is surely trying to invest in the new players rather than playing around the veterans.
