The match between Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at Quetta’s Bugti Stadium witnessed a dominant batting performance from the home side on the first day. Centuries from Imran Butt and Imran Farhat drove Balochistan’s fantastic batting display, allowing them to stamp their authority on the game.
However, the hosts’ batting success was subject to empty stands in the stadium depicting a grim picture of the decaying popularity of domestic cricket in Pakistan. This was pointed out by Pakistani footballer Kaleemullah Khan, who sarcastically claimed this represented the love people of Balochistan had for cricket.
Reacting to the seething comment, Southern Punjab batsman Sohail Maqsood denied the notion that cricket was not popular in Balochistan. He referred to the generally sparse crowds in first-class matches all around the country and stated that cricket was widely followed in Quetta and neighbouring cities.
