Discarding the wicket-keeper batsman Sarfaraz Ahmed, Pakistan decided to reward their top performer Babar Azam with the captaincy of the T20I team. While a group relished the decision and appreciated Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for making a bold move and thinking about the future, others remain unconvinced about this matter.
Former Pakistan player Iqbal Qasim belongs to the latter group as he feels that PCB made the decision in a haste. The Karachi born highlighted Babar Azam’s total International experience and added that the right-hander should have continued as a player for a few more years before ultimately taking over as the leader of the national team.
Iqbal also spurned the framework of how India’s best batsman Virat Kohli leads the team by incorporating the fact that the Delhi born leads a settled unit, while Babar would have to make a team out of the existing resources. The cricketer-turned expert is fearful that the captaincy might make him lose his batting mojo as Australia isn’t an easy place for an Asian batsman to play well, let alone captaining the side.
