Swathes of people took the streets to protest the ban imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Shakib Al Hasan for failing to report corrupt approaches. A crowd of approximately 700 people gathered in Shakib’s hometown Magura with smaller demonstrations in Dhaka asking the ICC to revoke the ban.
The former Bangladesh Test and T20 captain had accepted three charges for not informing the authorities regarding requests by bookies to provide inside information for betting purposes. As a result, Shakib was handed a two-year ban with 12 months of the ban suspended.
The protesting crowds have called the ban a “conspiracy” to destabilize Bangladesh cricket. "The protesters shouted slogans and marched along a highway," the local police chief Saiful Islam said.
