Former Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara will be in the midst of cricket action once again as he will be leading a Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) side against County Championship winners Essex at Galle in March 2020.
The classy left-handed batsman is currently serving as the MCC President – the first Asian person to hold this post. The contests between MCC and County champions go back to the 1970s while this will be the first time such a match will take place in Sri Lanka.
“It is hugely important to support cricket in countries such as Sri Lanka and taking the Champion County match to Galle is a fantastic way for the Club to provide its backing for the game on a global level,” Sangakkara said.
The flamboyant cricketer bowed out of international cricket in 2015 after racking up 12,400 runs in Test cricket at a stupendous average of 57.40. He found similar levels of success in ODI cricket, accumulating 14,234 runs in the 50-over format.
