The menace of match-fixing and illegal betting has plagued the Karnataka Premier League (KPL) with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) launching a sting operation to eradicate such corrupt activities. In the course of the investigation, Bengaluru Blasters batsman Nishant Singh Shekhawat has been arrested by the Central Crime Branch.
Shekhawat has been alleged to have introduced bookie Manoj Kumar to his team’s bowling coach Vinu Prasad, who was also arrested last month. Shekhawat influenced his teammate M Viswanathan to fix a certain match in the 2018 edition by ending his innings at a score of less than 10 off 20 balls, which he did.
Besides Shekhawat, CM Gautam and Abrar Kazi have also been arrested in different spot-fixing cases, posing questions over the future of the regional T20 tournament, which was founded in 2009 but was inactive for a few years in between.
