Former Australian great Adam Gilchrist has strongly defended Tim Paine’s captaincy position amidst the backlash. Paine’s ordinary batting performances have often attracted criticism with experts and fans questioning his place in the side.
However, Gilchrist believes Paine’s leadership credentials trumps the negativity surrounding his below-par batting. With the unstoppable Steve Smith nearing the end of his two-year exile from a leadership post due to his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal, there are calls regarding the return of Smith as the Australian skipper.
“I can't see any rush to push him out, as long as he's still performing, like we all had to, to stay in the team. Like every other player, he's got a hold of his spot in the team as being selected as the best available option for that player type. I think he's doing a wonderful job [as captain],” Gilchrist said.
The Paine-led Australia squad recently retained the prized Ashes urn in England following a highly competitive five-match series that was eventually drawn 2-2.
