Somerset star Tom Banton rose to prominence for his belligerent batting heroics in the Vitality Blast, where he finished as the tournament’s second-leading run-getter after Babar Azam. Having earned his maiden call-up to England’s T20I side, Banton has shown a lot of promise with his powerful drives in the two games he has gotten a chance to don the national colors.
The 20-year-old smashed a quick-fire 31 off 20 balls including four boundaries and a solitary maximum before being dismissed off the bowling of Mitchell Santner in the fourth game of the series against New Zealand.
Banton’s classy shots have caught the attention of premier Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who believes the youngster resembles former England great Kevin Pietersen in his strokeplay.
Ashwin pinpointed Banton’s slit grip and big front trigger while launching his flashy strokes that make his style of batting similar to that of Pietersen. This is certainly a huge compliment for young Banton, who is still finding his feet on the international stage.
