The big-hitting West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell brought forth his belligerent best as he smashed a 24-ball 58 to lead defending champions Northern Warriors to a nine-wicket win over Maratha Arabians in the Abu Dhabi T10 tournament opener.
Russell struck a total of six maximums and four boundaries during his menacing knock, punishing the Arabians bowling lineup with meaty blows from the middle of his bat. Arabians had the likes of Lasith Malinga, Mitchell McClenaghan and Dwayne Bravo in their bowling arsenal but even then they failed to prevent Russell’s onslaught, who finished the chase of the 89-run target in merely seven overs.
Russell’s magnificent batting display was also backed by a brilliant bowling performance earlier in the first innings as he returned only 12 runs in his two-over spell and managed to snaffle two wickets. The 31-year-old was thus duly bestowed with the man of the match award.
