India’s skipper Virat Kohli expressed his views about the lack of public interest in the Test format which has been more prominent in recent times. The Indian captain highlighted the fact that you cannot force someone to like the format when they don’t.
Moreover, he feels that the better Test calendar and schedules will bring in more people to watch the format. Test cricket, being the hardest format, demands extreme efforts from a cricket player. A few International cricketers have bid farewell to the Test cricket recently in order to focus on shorter formats of the game.
This has not been the case with the Indian cricket team due to the reason highlighted by the Indian captain in the recent press conference. Kohli believes that the incentivized Test contracts have helped the Indian cricket team in recent times.
“You can’t tell the players you have to be committed to playing Test cricket but contractually we won’t do anything for you. Because we are professional players, we earn a living as well”, he said. BCCI has incentivized Test contracts for the Indian players which allows them to prioritize the Test cricket over their other commitments.
