Asad Shafiq has been a vital cog in Pakistan’s Test side ever since he made his debut nine years ago. The middle-order batsman’s importance in the team has increased following the retirements of cricketing greats Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan.
Despite his consistent batting heroics, Shafiq nevertheless continues to be sidelined from the mainstream in terms of media attention.
Although he boasts an illustrious record in the format, he finds himself unfortunate to never be talked of in the same breath as some of his other teammates.
Not worried by the perception of being ‘underrated’ by experts, Shafiq stressed that he finds motivation in representing Pakistan on the international stage.
"I am not concerned whether my contributions are underplayed or I am underrated. I feel honored to play for Pakistan and don the national jersey. And this is the only appreciation I need,” he told reporters after striking another glorious half-century on the opening day of the first Test against Australia.
