Test captain Azhar Ali has said Babar Azam is due a promotion in the batting order following his consistent batting heroics in Test cricket. Babar smashed an outstanding century in the first Test in Australia but his relatively lower batting position of No. 5 has attracted criticism from pundits, who are of the view that he needs to bat higher in the lineup.
Babar actually began his Test career batting at No. 6 under previous coach Mickey Arthur’s tenure and has not had a fixed number in the order since then. Azhar feels a change in his batting position is imminent in the second Test in Adelaide with Haris Sohail likely to face the axe following his twin failures.
“The previous management had assigned him a lower number in the batting order so that he got started [in the longest former] but no one had any doubts in his ability. But now we are thinking to promote him up the order gradually. We all know how good he is but we also need to keep him at a position where he keeps on scoring,” Azhar told Pakistan Cricket Board’s podcast.
