Indian skipper Virat Kohli has returned to the top position in the ICC rankings for Test batsmen in the updated list following his remarkable 136 against Bangladesh in the day-night Test match in Kolkata. Kohli has displaced star Australian batter Steve Smith from the No. 1 slot as the latter has dropped to second place.
Kohli now possesses 928 points, which is five points clear of what Smith has accumulated. The battle between the two classy batsmen for the No. 1 spot has been in overdrive ever since Smith returned from his one-year exile from international cricket due to ball-tampering.
Smith had gone ahead of Kohli earlier this year following a ‘Bradman-Esque’ Ashes series where he amassed 774 runs in just seven innings.
However, his twin failures against Pakistan in the two home Tests has meant he has now slipped to the second position. Smith will, nevertheless, have the chance to overtake Kohli once again during Australia’s Test series against New Zealand.
