India’s 1983 World Cup win goes down in history as one of the most iconic triumphs that radically transformed the sport in the country. The Kapil Dev-led Indian side’s toppling of the mighty West Indies in an intense battle in the final of the World Cup inspired a generation of cricketers back in India.
Barring the effect on youngsters who later took up the sport, India’s win also left a lasting impact on other fanatic supporters of the game. Taking a trip down memory lane, Bollywood star Suniel Shetty revealed how feelings of elation engulfed the people present at the place where he was watching the match.
“I remember I was in a restaurant and the bar was filled with people because the final was on. The turn of events and India winning the World Cup led to a wave of euphoria, which resulted in a lot of glasses being shattered and no bills were paid that day since it was a free-for-all,” Shetty joyfully recalled.
