Pakistan cricket fans celebrated the return of Test cricket to the country in zealous fashion as they filled up the stadiums across the two games against Sri Lanka. While Karachi’s National Stadium wasn’t perhaps as populated as the turnout in Rawalpindi, the vocal support certainly galvanized the players to put in quality performances.
The dedication shown by the fans regarding their backing of the team can be encapsulated by a banner held aloft by a cricket-lover on the fourth day’s play of the second Test between the two teams. A Pakistan fan claimed to have traveled all the way from Nigeria to experience the dramatic return of Test cricket to the South Asian nation – the first Test series in Pakistan since 2009.
This passion and love for the game from the common people has helped cricket survive in the country amidst the dark times of forced exile following the terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore. These fans have glued together the foundations of Pakistan cricket and now they are finally reaping the rewards for this endurance by getting a chance to experience their victories at home.
