The year 2019 was filled with extraordinary performers lighting up the cricketing stage with their extravagant skills. Several new names popped up in the cricket world but some stood out for their sheer class and excellence. This list thus includes the breakthrough stars of the year who mesmerized everyone with their unwavering consistency.
Indian opening batsman Mayank Agarwal supremely filled the void in the top-order following the persistent failures of Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan. His terrific run-spree saw him dominate bowlers around the world as he amassed a sum of 754 runs in eight games including a double century.
Pakistan’s Abid Ali created history after becoming the first ever cricketer to score a century on both ODI and Test debuts. He was unfortunate not to hold onto his spot in the World Cup squad despite being initially included and later made a glamorous entry into Test cricket. He hit two tons in his first two games in the format – incidentally Pakistan’s first taste of Tests at home in 10 years.
Jofra Archer was fast-tracked into the England side just before the World Cup and had a blazing start to his international career. He was the pick of the bowlers for England in the showpiece event and bowled the final ball of the tournament helping his side to the title win. He later starred in the Ashes with a couple of brutal spells of pace bowling.
Marnus Labuschagne was drafted into the side as a concussion replacement for Steve Smith during the Ashes and has since gone on to tumble records. The middle-order batter continues to be in fine touch and his purple patch seems to never end. From obscurity at the start of the year, he is now the leading run-getter in Tests in 2019.
