England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler has been fined 15% of his match fee for his abusive tirade against Vernon Philander during the second Test in Newlands. He has also copped a demerit point from the International Cricket Council (ICC) in relation to the incident.
Buttler launched into an obscenity-filled rant at Philander on the tense final day of the Test match after the Proteas stalwart supposedly failed to move out of the way of a throw. Buttler’s excessive use of swear words was heard on the stump microphones instantly attracting criticism from fans.
Although many people believed Buttler would receive a heavier sanction for his actions, he has received a mere 15% fine. He was found to have violated Article 2.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “use of an audible obscenity during an international match”.
