Cricket South Africa’s director of cricket Graeme Smith clarified Faf du Plessis’ role in the team after he was replaced by Quinton de Kock as the ODI captain. Smith has stated clearly that Faf will not be reinstated as South Africa’s ODI captain, as with the decision of Quinton’s appointment, CSA is planning for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
Faf du Plessis, been short of runs for the past few months, indicated that the 4th Test at Wanderers against England could be his last Test match on home soil. Smith highlighted that they are looking forward to Faf’s role as a player in the team. "We see Faf playing a role as a player but from a leadership perspective, we felt that needs to move on," Smith added.
The veteran cricketer also said that the loss of captaincy for Faf du Plessis does not mean that his white-ball career has ended. "His record in one-day cricket and T20 cricket is outstanding"- Smith said. "It will be silly of us not to have him involved”-he concluded.
