Australia’s Under-19 players have copped a lot of criticism for their distasteful comments on a social media post by a fellow player since their language has been perceived as mocking non-native speakers of English.
The controversy erupted on the eve of Australia’s quarter-final clash against India, as several players commented on an Instagram post made by Jake Fraser-McGurk. The series of replies depicted a callous attitude employed by the Aussie youngsters. The comments were instantly deleted and now the Cricket Australia (CA) is considering sanctions on the young players.
“Some of that language could be interpreted as ridiculing non-native English language speakers. I have spoken to the players and expressed in no uncertain terms that such language has no place in society and falls well short of the standards we expect as Australian cricketers. The players have apologised for the language and have taken down the posts,” CA’s head of integrity and security Sean Carroll said.
