Sydney Thunder’s Alex Hales has denied his actions during the Big Bash League (BBL) against Hobart Hurricanes were anything illegal. Hales was spotted retreating outside of the inner circle in the 12th over of the opposition’s innings.
He then received an official warning from the umpire for doing this. Although his movement is within the regulations, former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting insisted Hales had gone against the spirit of the game.
"It's actually cheating. Take your position and then walk in with the bowler, you can't go backwards. He was supposed to be one of four fielders inside the circle. He starts walking back outside the circle before the ball is being bowled,” Ponting had complained.
Hales later defended himself and stated his disgust at being called a ‘cheat’ on live television. He said his actions were perfectly fine as he was merely anticipating the batsman’s next shot.
