Nasir Jamshed’s wife Dr. Samara Afzal has penned a detailed heartfelt note following the conviction of her husband. Jamshed was given a 17-month prison sentence for his principal role in a spot-fixing scandal and luring other cricketers with bribes.
Reacting to the news, Samara expressed deep regret at the path of crime taken by her husband. She narrated the enormous emotional pain caused to her family due to Jamshed’s actions.
“Nasir could have had a bright future had he worked hard and been committed to the sport than gave him so much, but he took a short cut and lost everything, his career, status, respect and freedom,” Samara’s statement read.
She also spoke at length about the opportunities Jamshed had to reform his life since he could have availed a lucrative contract in England’s county circuit but he wasted all those chances for achieving more through corrupt means. Samara mentioned the trauma she and her daughter will have to face with Jamshed in jail and cautioned all cricketers to never take the path taken by her husband.
“He would have got UK nationality and played county cricket, and he threw his chance away. He would do anything to turn the clock back and not lose everything, especially his daughter who he is very close to, but it’s too late for him. I hope all cricketers look at his example as a deterrent against corruption.”
