In a remarkable show of strength and character, it has now been revealed that Bangladesh Under-19 skipper Akbar Ali battled through the pain of losing his sister at the start of the tournament to lead his team to World Cup glory.
Akbar was initially not informed about his dear sister’s demise, who supported him throughout his playing career. He then came across the news on a local website and despite the trauma of the tragic death, kept on captaining Bangladesh unscathed through the obstacles.
“Akbar was closest to his sister. She loved Akbar a lot. We did not want to inform him at first. He then called after the Pakistan match and questioned his brother why he was not kept in the loop. I did not have the courage to talk to him. I don’t know what to say” - Akbar’s father was quoted as saying.
