Quetta Gladiators are the defending Pakistan Super League (PSL) champions and will kick-start proceedings for the fifth season with a clash against two-time PSL title-holders Islamabad United on February 20.
Quetta Gladiators are the only team that has barely changed the outlook of its side for the upcoming season with most of its winning squad from the last year intact. While they possess a much balanced team compared to rival PSL franchises, Quetta seem to have an issue of a lot of opening batsmen in their lineup, leaving the team management the headache of settling with a fixed combination at the top of the order.
Shane Watson, Jason Roy, Ahmed Shehzad, Ahsan Ali and Khurram Manzoor all can open the innings for the Gladiators with several of them having done so in the past. Watson in particular has been a champion batsman for the team, earning the player of the tournament prize last year while Shehzad struck four consecutive half-centuries in the latter half of the fourth season.
Ahsan has made massive strides over the past year, managing to break into the national side during the series against Bangladesh whereas Manzoor is considered one of the top players on the domestic circuit. It will be interesting to see what the Quetta think-tank feels will best suit their requirements in light of the multiple options.
