Umar Akmal suspended under Pakistan Cricket Board’s anti-corruption unit

Quetta Gladiators has received a huge blow ahead of their opening encounter against Islamabad United as their middle-order batsman Umar Akmal has been suspended under PCB’s anti-corruption unit with immediate effect. The right-handed batsman has been handed suspension under article 4.7.1, this indicates that Umar won’t be able to participate in any cricket activity until PCB’s investigation is completed.

PCB has not disclosed anything in the ongoing investigation. Quetta Gladiators is allowed to replace a player for Umar Akmal for the HBL PSL 5, however; there is no official announcement from Quetta Gladiators so far.

Article 4.7.1 states that (a) whether the PCB decides to charge a participant with an offense under the anti-Corruption Code (b) or there are some other relevant circumstances, the circumstances where the integrity of the sport can be affected- in this case, the participant is provisionally suspended until further investigations.

This is not the first time that Umar Akmal has come under scrutiny. The right-handed batsman was recently cleared by PCB for his behavioral issues but the cricket board cannot afford a single spot on the integrity of the Pakistan Super League. In this regard, they have suspended Umar Akmal until further investigations.
