Sri Lanka have started the ODI series against West Indies in a strong manner as they defeated the visitors by 1 wicket in a thriller. The first game of the three-match series saw the visitors batting first to put a healthy total of 289 runs on the board, which was chased down by the batting heroics of leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga.
Earlier, West Indian wicket-keeper batsman Shai Hope continued his glorious run in ODI cricket. Coming to bat as an opener, he witnessed an early wicket. However, he consumed all the pressure and kept going well to form crucial partnerships with middle-order batters Darren Bravo and Roston Chase. With this, he managed to put the maroon team back on track.
Doing so, the rising batting sensation also accumulated his 9th ODI century. Shai Hope mustered 115 runs off 140 balls, scoring 10 fours to augment his strike-rate. However, it all ended in vain as Sri Lanka was found recording an impressive performance to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
