Australia’s star batsman Steve Smith has once again leapfrogged Virat Kohli to reclaim the No. 1 spot in the updated ICC Test rankings for batsmen. The run-scoring machine has surged back to the top position for the eighth time in his career following Kohli’s underwhelming performance in the first Test in New Zealand.
The Indian skipper could manage a total of just 21 runs across the two innings in Wellington as India slipped to their first defeat in the World Test Championship campaign. The successive failures have seen Kohli lose points in the rankings with his tally now reading 906 in comparison to Smith’s 911 points.
The tooth and nail battle between the two quality batsmen has been going on for several years. Smith first reached the summit of the world rankings after his stellar performance in the 2015 Ashes tour. Kohli had earlier snatched the No. 1 place from Smith when the Aussie could not make a lot of runs during Australia’s home summer.
