Pakistan women’s team has gotten off to a strong start to their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup campaign by defeating their West Indian counterparts by eight wickets in Canberra. Often dismissed as the underdogs, Pakistan were able to pull off a major upset by prevailing against the 2016 world champions in a rather one-sided affair.
The Caribbean side’s decision to bat first immediately backfired when Hayley Matthews was dismissed on the very first ball of the innings by Diana Baig. The right-arm pacer was able to snaffle another scalp in her exuberant spell of bowling as West Indies tried hard to recover from the early blows.
They eventually scraped to a barely competitive total of 124/7 in 20 overs as all the Pakistani bowlers delivered a disciplined performance. West Indies’ hopes of restricting the opposition were splattered when Javeria Khan launched a brutal assault upfront with skipper Bsimah Maroof playing a solid hand to help her team cross the line with 10 balls to spare.
