South Africa started off the ODI series in the winning fashion after they went down 2-1 in the T20I series against Australia. Batting first at Paarl, South Africa managed to put up a total of 291 for 7 on the board. After a poor start from the openers, Heinrich Klaasen and the debutant Kyle Verreynne put up a stabling partnership for the home team.
Klaasen went on to score a maiden century of his career. His innings of 123 took South Africa to a fighting total. Pat Cummins once again proved his class with 3 wickets to his name. In reply, Australia lost David Warner and Aaron Finch without much runs on the board. Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne steadied the ship for the visitors.
While Smith was batting on 76, Anrich Nortje trapped him LBW and brought his side right back into the game. It did not take long for the South African bowlers to clean up the Australian tale and the side was bowled out for just 217 runs. South Africa’s 74-run win over Australia gives them a lead of 1-0 in the 3-match ODI series.
