Assessment of Sohail Akhtar as Lahore Qalandars’ leader

Lahore’s horrific show in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is yet to get arrested as the team continuous to rewrite the losing records of the 20-over competition. Their first three games in PSL 2020 saw them getting bossed by Peshawar, Islamabad and Multan. For this reason, they are glued to the bottom of the table with 0 points.

One of the most discussed topics coming into this year’s PSL was the decision to appoint Sohail Akhtar as the captain of Lahore Qalandars despite having the luxury of all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez. This has proved to be a horrible decision so far as the right-handed batsman looked clueless on crunch moments. While he started the season with a fighting 34 not out against Multan, he scored 1 and 12 in the next 2 games.

As a leader, he has made a plethora of questionable decisions. Against Multan, he fielded 5 pacers on a track which assisted spin. The game against Islamabad saw him underusing Mohammad Hafeez against the likes of Colin Ingram who happens to be a left-handed batsman. Battling against Peshawar, the 33-year old held himself and David Weise back despite having the reputation of big hitters.

It is important to note that these are only few mistakes of him as the issue of Lahore not playing a team having enough depth hasn’t been mentioned. Moreover, the owners have shown immense confidence in the abilities of head coach Aaqib Javed despite him producing the worst results for any franchise. It remains to be seen how they fare in their next 7 games, but nothing seems to be on track as far as Qalandars’ journey in PSL is concerned.
