The ICC World Test Championship- the first of its kind- is the major ICC tournament currently taking place between the top Test playing nations of the world. Each team is scheduled to play 6 Test series including 3 home and 3 away series. The current stats show that India is leading the points table with 360 points to its name followed by Australia at number 2 position. With still 15 months left before the big final takes place at Lords in June 2021. Let us scrutinize the chances of the top 5 contenders of the ICC Test Championship’s title:
India: India had a dominant start to the mega-tournament with 7 victories on the trot. However, their defeat against New Zealand in the 2-match Test series has widely opened the tournament. India has 9 more Test scheduled before the final which includes 4 away Test matches against Australia and 5 home games against England. The men in blue has 240 max points available at their disposal but it won’t be easy to snatch victories from the top teams of the modern-day cricket.
Australia: Australia always stays in the race of victory in major ICC tournaments and same is the case with the World Test Championship. Slowly progressing, the mighty Aussies will back themselves to take a flight to England in the mid of the next year’s summer. With 296 points to their name, Australia still have 3 Test series left before the big final. They will play a Test series against Bangladesh (away), India (home), and South Africa (away). Australia can still get a hand on 360 maximum points which solidifies their position in the mega-tournament. Nevertheless, it will not be easy to win matches in the away series and to defeat India at their own backyard as well.
New Zealand: The next contenders in the long-race are the Kiwis, who recently strengthened their case by winning 2 Test matches against India at home. Same like their neighbors, the Kiwis have 360 points available at their disposal with 3 Test series yet to be played by them. This includes away series against Bangladesh and 2 home series against the Windies and Pakistan respectively.
England: The next in line are the Englishmen- who did not start off their stint really well courtesy their 2 defeats against the Aussies at home in the Ashes. England has 146 points in their pocket and 480 maximum points at their disposal. England is scheduled to play 4 Test series- which include series against Sri Lanka (away), the Windies (home), Pakistan (home), and India (away). With 2 home series still left, England will back itself to go on and play the final in front of its home crowd.
Pakistan: When it comes to Pakistan no one can ever write them off from a major ICC tournament. The mercurial Pakistan is currently standing on the number 5th position with 140 points to its name. Pakistan still has one Test match left against Bangladesh to be played at home. Following that, Pakistan will play away Test series against England, away series against New Zealand, and home series against South Africa. The men in green has 420 max points at their disposal.
