The return of departmental cricket in some form is very much likely as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) CEO Wasim Khan specified plans of arranging such a tournament in the 2020-21 season of domestic cricket.
The PCB had earlier revamped the whole domestic cricketing structure including the abolition of departmental cricket and restricting the number of domestic sides to six, based on the regions. However, in response to constant criticism from the stakeholders who lost out due to the elimination of departmental cricket, the PCB has decided to partially revive this structure.
“We have actually created a window for a tournament for departments in the upcoming 2020-21 season. When we spoke to the players and departments about how we could soften the blow, one of the things that came back quite strongly was if we could create a small window for a department tournament as it would give the departments an opportunity to keep a lot of the players on their books,” Wasim said.
