Former England skipper Andrew Strauss has admitted his shortcomings in handling the differences with feisty batsman Kevin Pietersen in a much-publicized scandal that fractured the relationship between the two individuals.
Although Pietersen has his place among the greatest ever English batsmen to take the field, he was involved in a text-messaging controversy in 2012 where he insulted then-skipper Strauss in a series of texts sent to opposing South African players. He signed off on a dramatic note with in-fighting in the dressing room.
Reflecting on the matter, Strauss claimed he should have handled the Pietersen saga with a cooler head than leaving his teammate be himself in the situation.
“There was an opportunity there, not necessarily to bring him in, but spend a lot more time with him and make sure his views were valued and considered. ‘I think instead I just let KP be KP. In retrospect that was a mistake and might have sowed the seeds for what was to come down the track,” Strauss said in a podcast with a leading sports website.
