Babar Azam has continued to grow in stature since his arrival on the international arena and is now considered to be Pakistan’s premier batsman across formats given his stellar record over the past year or so.
Babar’s dramatic turnaround in Test cricket following a prolonged period of mediocrity perhaps came during his heroics in South Africa in 2018/19 when he completely dominated the likes of Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada with his breathtaking drives.
Reflecting on the challenge presented by Babar’s blistering strokeplay, Steyn admitted that he was probably naïve to dismiss his counterpart’s talent initially and paid the price for poor lines and lengths.
“I love the fact that Babar came out and played with that aggressive mindset. I know I bowled like five half-volleys in a row to give him that opportunity to get onto that role. I think I probably underestimated his ability,” Steyn said in a chat with Islamabad United.
