It is extremely hard to overemphasize the importance of former pacers Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram for Pakistan. Throughout their careers, the bowling machines kept on producing a plethora of sensational performances which allowed the boys in green to register countless victories.
While the Sultan of Swing has a total of 916 international wickets to his name, the Burewala Express managed to hunt 789 victims. Together, the two genuine match-winners formed a potent force for the green team which penetrated event the best batting line-ups from a position least expected.
Their dominance can be understood from the fact that Pakistani bowlers claimed a total of 33 five-wicket hauls in Test cricket from 1989 to 1995. All of them belonged to the two Ws. On 14 occasions, Wasim managed to get 5 wickets or more while 19 of those instances belonged to Waqar Younis. With such a pace unit, it was only natural to see Pakistan giving many teams a run for their money during this era.
