Senior Pakistani wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal has proceeded to defend younger brother Umar Akmal after the latter was banned for three years from all cricket by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Umar has been punished by the cricket body for his failure to report corrupt approaches.
Incensed by the severity of the sanction, Kamran has termed the punishment as “extremely harsh” and called on the authorities to show some leniency in his brother’s case. Kamran showcased a willingness to appeal the verdict despite Umar initially refusing to contest his charges.
“We are shocked at the three-year ban. The punishment handed to Umar Akmal is extremely harsh but we are waiting for the detailed verdict. There are precedents of much shorter bans on similar violations in the past. We are at a loss to understand why Umar Akmal has been treated differently,” Kamran stated.
