Mohammad Yousuf reigns among the greatest batsmen to ever emerge from Pakistan. His solid technique and astounding class helped him reach unparalleled heights of success. The peak of his immense caliber was witnessed in the calendar year of 2006 when Yousuf broke the longstanding record of Viv Richards of scoring the most number of Test runs in 12 months.
The champion batter surpassed Richards’ landmark tally of 1710 runs during a home Test series against West Indies. Tracing his journey to the moment when he achieved the tremendous feat, Yousuf recalled that he was very nervous on the night before the historic moment took place.
“Breaking the record was not in my mind during the series, but the feeling of overtaking Viv Richards started to nag me in the final Test. The night before I required 30-40 runs to break the record, was very difficult for me as I kept awake. Nevertheless, I had a firm belief in the Almighty and I managed to achieve this,” he recounted in an exclusive chat with Cricingif.
