Former speedster Shoaib Akhtar has backed Umar Akmal after the middle-order batsman copped a three-year ban by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for failing to report corrupt approaches to authorities.
Citing the comeback of certain tainted cricketers who were convicted of spot-fixing, Akhtar laid the blame primarily on the PCB for harboring a lenient attitude towards the corrupt ills. He opined that Umar’s ban was harsh in such circumstances where disgraced players have been able to get their spot back in the mainstream.
“This Umar Akmal case was inevitable. But was the ban justified? PCB might put pressure on Umar Akmal if he appeals, they might scare him into accepting his mistake and hand him a small ban. In any case, the whole world is under a 1.5-year ban (due to coronavirus),” Akhtar ranted.
